Nearly one month has passed since the U.S. Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade and only now am I able to write about it. If you think art isn’t the place for political or moral discourse you’re going to be sorely disappointed when your movies and video games, books and music, start to reflect the world we live in as life imitates art and art imitates life. So what is an artist to do? The world is changing rapidly in chaotic and unthinkable ways faster than we can imagine and everyone feels powerless to stop it. Historically, artists quite literally capture time. Their paintings or music outline what’s going on or are a direct result of a social shift. Some pose questions for the future, and more difficultly, offer ideas or solutions for the present.
At the start of each new challenge in life and in the world, there’s a period of reaction before a composed and processed response. The reaction was taking to the streets in a massive effort to be heard by officials across the country that the majority oppose this decision and support the most basic liberty of choice and bodily autonomy. Now the real work begins for many wishing to protect our democracy from extremists and supremacists. Since current issues surrounding environmental collapse have been a focus of mine for a while now, it was easy to shift my focus to the social and political issues now at hand. I quickly created stickers that create a new visual symbol for the Pro-Choice movement to discourage appropriation from other cultural movements. I only have a few designs up so far, but I’m certainly enjoying creating these dynamic line work pieces. More designs for future slogans may be in the works soon.
Stickers are now available on my website under the “prints” tab and the profit will go directly towards my local health clinic and to the Susan Wicklund Fund.
You can help support the right to an abundance of choice by donating, volunteering, and sharing local initiatives in your state for Ranked Choice Voting for 2023 and beyond. Our current two party system is tearing everyone apart and incentivizing extreme political behaviors over common sense and practical moves for the good of all people. If you want your voice to actually be heard and for your vote to actually make a difference in elections, change the incentive from Leaders appealing to the most extreme only, to the majority of those they govern. Continue to protest, share, and create art and positivity in this rapidly changing world. Be the hope you wish to see in the world and others will follow.
With Gratitude,
